EASTLAND: Gen. Fred Rogers has scheduled a news conference here at the headquarters of the American Army in Iraq. We assume that it is to confirm the death of Capt. Peter P. Kane, who was fatally wounded while diverting a suicide bomber from a square in Baghdad.

ROGERS: Most of you have heard the report that Capt. Pete Kane was killed by a suicide bomber yesterday. That report was true. Capt. Kane expired at 2000 hours last night. However, nine and a half minutes later he began to breathe again. Col. Dwight Schlossman, chief of brain surgery, has told me that while such revivals are not uncommon, the length of the flatline on Capt. Kane’s brain monitor was unusually long. He himself has never observed such a period of brain inactivity in his field, but he has read reports of such phenomenon. We are delighted that Capt. Kane remains with us. His condition is still described as critical but he seems to be improving rapidly.

EASTLAND: I want to assure WTN watchers that I am not the only one in this room who is crying.
